Am I an unpaid carer?

You might not think of yourself as a carer

You may simply see yourself as a husband, wife, partner, parent, son, daughter, friend or neighbour who is helping someone you care about.

You may be an unpaid carer if you regularly support someone because of illness, disability, mental ill health, addiction or because they are older and need additional help.

Caring can look different for everyone

You do not need to live with the person you support or provide personal care to be considered a carer.

The support you give may include practical help, emotional support or making sure someone is safe and has what they need.

Helping with shopping, meals or medication
Taking someone to appointments
Managing paperwork, bills or care arrangements
Providing emotional support and reassurance
Checking someone is safe and coping at home
Supporting someone even though you live separately

Questions about carers support

Who is Liverpool Carers Centre for?

Liverpool Carers Centre supports unpaid adult carers who care for someone living in Liverpool. Contact us if you are unsure whether you are eligible.

Do I have to live with the person I support?

No. You may still be an unpaid carer if you live separately but regularly provide practical or emotional support.

Do I need to provide personal care?

No. Caring may include emotional support, attending appointments, collecting medication, managing paperwork, shopping or checking that someone is safe.

Is carers support free?

Information, advice and support from Liverpool Carers Centre is free. We will explain if a separate external activity has a cost.

Can I work and still be a carer?

Yes. Many unpaid carers combine caring with employment, education or raising a family.

What happens during a Carers Assessment?

It is a conversation about your caring role, how it affects you and what support could help. It is not a test of your ability to care.

Can a professional refer someone?

Professionals can contact Liverpool Carers Centre to discuss the most appropriate referral route. GP practices can also contact our GP Link Work team.

You do not have to manage everything alone
