Local Solutions Community Empowerment Fund

Local Solutions’ Community Empowerment Fund is a key part of our commitment to empower change. We hope this fund will provide individuals and groups with opportunities to make a difference in their own communities. We want to support ideas that empower, include, and have a positive impact on local people.

We want these grants to support smaller projects, ideas and initiatives that come through, or inspire, voluntary social action, rather than to fund larger established charities and community groups.

If you have an idea that would make a difference to people in your community but need a little funding or support, then the Community Empowerment Fund might be right for you.

We recently awarded a grant from our Community Empowerment Fund to Liverpool Basketball Club, and we’re excited to share how this support will positively impact their community.

Liverpool Basketball Club is a vibrant organization with over 150 members, ranging from ages 6 to 14. The grant will fund the training of an existing member, enabling them to earn a coaching qualification.

The club thrives on the dedication of volunteers, so investing in their development is both a gesture of gratitude and a step toward securing the club’s future.

If you have a project that could benefit your community and need financial assistance or support, the Community Empowerment Fund may be just what you need.

Fir Tree Community Farm was recently awarded a grant from our Community Empowerment Fund, and we’re eager to share how this will positively impact their community.

Founded in 2009 as a Social Enterprise project, Fir Tree Community Farm offers volunteer horticultural sessions to help reduce social isolation within the local community.

Spanning 5 acres of woodland, the farm invites volunteers to engage in various activities such as planting, vegetable picking, scything, traditional crafts, and apple pressing.

With the grant from Local Solutions, the farm will be able to purchase an industrial apple press, allowing them to process apples from their orchard into fresh apple juice. The proceeds from selling the juice and farm-grown vegetables will be reinvested into the farm, ensuring the project’s sustainability for future volunteers.

Additionally, the new apple press will enable Fir Tree Farm to offer apple pressing experiences to the public, generating further income to support the farm and its initiatives.

Volunteering at Fir Tree Farm fosters a strong sense of community, providing individuals with opportunities to connect, share experiences, and build meaningful relationships, effectively reducing social isolation.

Lister Residents Association, recently awarded a grant from our Community Empowerment Fund, has been making a significant impact in the heart of Kensington.

For over 20 years, the residents have lovingly cultivated a beautiful green space for everyone in the community to enjoy. Initially an overgrown area, it has since been transformed into a vibrant community hub featuring rockeries, a sensory garden, a barbecue area, a hospitality space, and a memorial garden. The space is maintained by a dedicated team of three volunteers, but all residents are encouraged to participate, fostering a sense of belonging and shared responsibility.

Throughout the year, around 200 people, along with their families and friends, benefit from this space during personal visits and organized events, such as Halloween festivities and summer gatherings.

Thanks to the grant from Local Solutions, the Association has now added the final touch—a wooden outhouse. This sheltered space will enable residents to host social activities year-round, further enhancing the community spirit and making the space even more accessible to all.

Autism Adventures Group have been awarded a £1,900 grant from our Community Empowerment Fund.

This incredible group, founded and run by Julie and her amazing team, is making a real difference for families across Liverpool.

Julie’s journey began when her son was diagnosed with autism at the age of 3. Feeling lost and isolated, she noticed the lack of support for parents like her. As her son grew older, Julie had to leave her job to care for him full-time, which only fueled her passion to create better resources for autistic children and their families.

Over the past nine years, Julie has become a force to be reckoned with, building relationships with MPs and Lord Mayors. Thanks to her hard work, Liverpool now has autism-friendly shopping environments, sports groups, and CPD-accredited training for parents.

With the new funding from Local Solutions, Julie plans to offer regular 4-week courses for parents. These courses will help them understand their child’s diagnosis, provide the tools to keep their child safe, and teach them how to advocate for their children in education and employment.

Sister’s Roundtable Chats has recently received a grant from the Community Empowerment Fund.

Sylvia Kalungi runs this amazing group for multi-ethnicity women across Merseyside. Around 30 incredible women gather each month to chat about issues affecting them, offering peer support and guidance.

Today’s hot topic? The perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause! These brave women shared personal experiences to demystify and destigmatise the topic. They talked about the physical and emotional symptoms, support from GPs and employers, and tips to relieve the impact of this often daunting and lonely time.

Thanks to Local Solutions Community Empowerment Fund, they’ve created online resources to help more women access the support and advice they need
