Lucy’s Story

Staying home, staying herself.

Homecare support helping someone remain at home
Real stories

Helping Lucy stay where she belongs: at home

Lucy is 40 and lives at home with her husband, Stuart, and their seven year old daughter, Clara. Their home is full of the everyday signs of family life, from toys on the living room floor to drawings on the fridge.

Lucy is living with Motor Neurone Disease and, as her needs have changed, Local Solutions’ Homecare team has supported her to remain safe, comfortable and connected to the people she loves most.

“I couldn’t live at home without Local Solutions.”

Read Lucy’s full story

Lucy is living with Motor Neurone Disease, a progressive neurological condition that slowly affects the body’s ability to move, speak and carry out daily tasks. As the condition has developed, she has needed increasing support with everyday life, but what has never changed is her determination to stay at home with the people who mean everything to her.

For Lucy, home is more than a place. It is where she still wakes up to Clara’s laughter. It is where she and Stuart still share quiet moments of togetherness. It is where she feels safe, connected and herself.

For the past 15 months, Local Solutions’ Homecare team has been by Lucy’s side, helping make this possible. Every day, carers visit to support her with personal care, medication, meal preparation and catheter care, helping her remain comfortable, supported and dignified in her own home.

But the care goes far beyond routine. The team works closely with Lucy and her family, adapting support gently as her needs change. Seeing familiar, trusted faces has brought stability and reassurance during a time filled with uncertainty.

As Lucy’s condition has progressed, speaking has become increasingly difficult. She now communicates using an assistive device, selecting words and phrases that appear on a screen. In her quiet but powerful way, she shared a message she wanted others to hear:

“I couldn’t live at home without Local Solutions.”

Among her regular carers is Anita, someone who has become far more than a support worker. Anita brings warmth, humour and genuine companionship into the home. From preparing meals to helping Lucy throughout the day, she has become part of the rhythm of the household.

The home itself has evolved too. Specialist equipment and adaptations have been put in place to support Lucy’s mobility, and the team has undertaken additional training to ensure the right care continues to be delivered as her needs change.

Lucy’s story is a powerful reminder of what compassionate, personalised homecare can mean. It is not just about meeting practical needs. It is about preserving identity, protecting family life and helping someone remain in the place they feel safest, surrounded by the people they love most.
