Being a trustee for Local Solutions is one of the most rewarding things I’ve done.
For the past 5 years I’ve had the privilege of being Chair of a wonderfully engaged and talented group of trustees who give their time and expertise to help shape and steer the work of one of Liverpool City Region’s key institutions.
With 50 years of rich history, we do not underestimate the role we play in governing such an important and impactful organisation and often feel the weight of responsibility. However, the vibrancy and commitment of the Local Solutions staff and volunteers, operating within a supportive culture and openness to challenge set by our Chief Executive, makes our job easier.
Starting as a Trustee, I remember being nervous at my first board meetings – not sure how I could contribute and add value. I quickly learned that being my authentic self and bringing my own experience was welcomed and embraced. The governance skills can be learned, but your passion and interest are the foundations. Some of our best Board meetings are when we don’t agree with each other, but we are open to listening and trust each other to make informed decisions in the best interests of the charity in making a genuine impact.
If you’re thinking about becoming a Trustee, please feel confident to try it – especially if you have no prior experience. Charities need a diverse range of skills, expertise and most importantly lived experience – you can play a valuable role in your own community and learn some skills and meet some new people along the way.
So, my advice on becoming a trustee? Find an organisation or a cause that inspires you, engage with it and bring your own unique personality and experience to it – I don’t think you’ll regret it!
