Wilf is 93 and his wife Evelyn is 90, they have been married for 70 years and have lived in the same house for 60 years. During COVID Wilf fell at home and broke his hip and after surgery was in hospital for five weeks.  Since he was discharged from hospital Wilf has received daily visits from a carer. This care has enabled him to return home to be with Evelyn.

The Carer visits every morning 7 days a week to wash and dress Wilf and make sure that he is taking his medication correctly. Evelyn admits that, without the help of a carer, she would not have been able to support Wilf alone at home and he would probably have had to go into a nursing home. Evelyn does not drive and so she would have been reliant on public transport, taxis or relatives to go and visit him.

Wilf’s daughter Margaret could see that the fall had affected her dad’s confidence and she was concerned that this would affect his independence. The support that he receives gives her  reassurance and peace of mind and provides her with the assurance that her elderly mum and dad and are able to manage at home.

Melanie is 38 years old and has been receiving help from a Care Support Worker at Local Solutions for the last 15 years.

Melanie had to have major surgery at only 3 days old, a life-saving shunt was fitted to drain her brain. At the age of 2, she had additional surgery and it was then that she had a major fit and was diagnosed with epilepsy. At the age of 6, a scan revealed a cyst on Melanie’s brain requiring further surgery.

As a result of her condition, Melanie has complex learning difficulties, slow speech, short-term memory loss and poor hand and eye co-ordination. Her health issues are complex, and she requires constant supervision throughout the day. During the night she is also linked to a sleep apnea machine. Melanie’s dad sadly died from cancer in 2016 and so mum, Sue is her full- time carer. The only respite that Sue receives is a weekly 4-hour call from Melanie’s Support Worker, Ann.

Ann is a highly skilled Care Worker and is also fully trained in first aid. She can recognise the signs that Melanie may be about to have a fit, and she can also maintain her safety if she does have a fit. Routine is very important to Melanie and Ann supports her with weekly structure and familiarity.

They enjoy shopping together and Ann helps her to manage her money, supports her with checking change and helps her to understand her choices. With Ann’s support, Melanie can leave home without her mum and have some independence and feel empowered.

Cognitive Support

Cognitive help is the ability to think clearly, solve problems, remember things and learn, it’s plays an important part in enabling you to perform everyday activities.

Cognitive health is just one aspect of overall brain health. As with other areas of health and wellness, deliberate effort is needed to maintain and improve cognitive health.

Diet, exercise, sleep and stress reduction all contribute to good cognitive health but social interaction stimulates and challenges the brain in ways that solitary activities cannot. It draws on a range of skills including processing faces and gestures, decision making and social interaction. Challenging the brain with specific activities such as games that keep the brain guessing including reading, writing, solving puzzles and playing games ca help to improve cognitive function.

If you are concerned about your cognitive function, or the cognitive function of a family member, we can provide a specially trained Carer to visit your home to sit with you or your loved one and take part in activities that will boost brain activity improving cognitive abilities.

The price of care is very dependent upon your individual care needs, to discuss your requirement today call a member of the Homecare team and they will be happy to help.
